My daughter is a budding artist, she loves watercolours and little paintings and drawings. She made me a card for my birthday, she painted a beautiful picture of Krishna on the front. It is so sweet and was the perfect reminder for me that Krishna is our shelter and friend.
Lots of things can go through your mind around birthdays and holidays. Besides the parties and presents often there can be sadness and worry as our bodies age, this is natural if we consider that we are this body. We don’t feel as if we the person inside are old or aging, so aging feels very unnatural to us. As a Vaishnava one of the foundations that we understand is – we are not this material body. We are the spirit soul temporarily inside the body. We are not material but spiritual in essence.
In the great vedic scripture Bhagavad Gita it says:
“For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.”
Bhagavad Gita 2:20
It is the nature of the spirit soul to love and be loved. It is all we really crave, we look for it in different ways but ultimately we want to love someone and be loved. If we only look for that love in the temporary world we will never be fully satisfied. Even if we find a perfect soul mate, have a perfect child it has to end when the body dies. If we take that desire to love, and place it on the Supreme Person, Krishna, we can experience real love and happiness. Our relationship with God is eternal, it is not dependant on this body. Krishna is our eternal friend and well wisher and it is our natural function to love Him and serve Him.
Krishna on your birthday and Krishna everyday 🙂
